Aurelius Augustinus, eventually called Hipponensis, was a teacher, monk, and bishop. He is also one of the most important theologians ever produced by the Latin-speaking Christian Church, and a philosopher whose influence extends well beyond the boundaries of the Christian community.
For a quick introduction to his life, you can read this Wikipedia page. You can read a little about his writings at the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy -- and if you are an Augustine expert, they are looking for somebody to write a better article. The best modern biography is probably Peter Brown's Augustine of Hippo, first published in 1967 and recently updated with new material. I have also been meaning to read James J. O'Donnell's 2005 Augustine: A New Biography, and will probably poke through it as I am reading City of God.
